| Spas, massages and wraps Have you had a massage, a wrap or a spa therapy treatment? If you have then you have already experienced a touch of heaven. My sister would book her massage and treatments weeks before arriving at her health club so that she was guaranteed her particular slot. Having never experienced any type of spa treatment and actually scoffed at any idea of their having any beneficial merit I used to view this as a very strange and curious practice. That was until, after a car accident, I was forced to listen to my chiropractor’s advice and reluctantly booked one for myself. On arrival I advised my masseuse that I was not looking forward to it, that I could not understand why people raved about them and that there was not any way that I would be able to relax as I was a conditioned coiled spring of stress which absolutely nothing would unwind. Yes I admit I was wrong. After fighting against relaxing so much as even one muscle I gave in and mentally floated away on a warm cloud. My muscles relaxed to a degree unknown since being a child coddled in a swathe of soft fleecy blankets. Her magic practiced fingers found even the smallest knots and gently kneaded them into oblivion. It was wonderful I felt wholly rejuvenated and would now therefore unhesitatingly totally recommend them. My introduction to wraps was a little different. We were on a transatlantic cruise and as we left the warm Caribbean waters and headed out into the mid Atlantic Ocean I was horrified to realize just how many extra pounds I had managed to add during the first week of the voyage. So when a flyer popped out of the daily information newsletter providing details on several different spa treatments, one of which was a seaweed wrap, I decided to investigate further. Apparently the wrap would remove toxins from the body and facilitate in losing a few pounds. As it was now difficult to comfortably wear several of my favorite outfits I decided that the seaweed wrap was for me and without any further hesitation called the spa requesting a booking for the seafood wrap. I was tactfully informed that the wrap did not contain shrimp or lobster but juniper, lemon, essential oils, seaweed and algae. I was told to drink several glasses of water before the treatment. When I arrived at the impressive 25,000 square foot Aqua Spa by Elemis I was given a personal, one to one, very informative discussion in a wonderful relaxed atmosphere. The muted decoration already had a calming effect. I was told that the wrap improved sagging skin, stretch marks, the dimpled appearance of cellulite and reduced fluid retention, stimulated circulation, increases metabolism and that it detoxified and deep cleansed the body both inside and out and, then the magic words, helped you lose and inch or two. I was convinced. I was given a robe and slippers and escorted into an attractive but somewhat sterile private room and showered. After the shower I was measured, the wrap was prepared and I was helped onto the padded bed. The seaweed was buttered on and I was wrapped in thermal gauze and foil like an Egyptian hot dog. I was then treated to pressure point facial massage and de-stress scalp treatment which was exceptionally good. After the massage the therapist advised me to relax and she departed. I was alone on a table covered in seaweed, looking like a large silver hip flask and gazing out onto a vast panoramic view of the Atlantic Ocean. It was a very strange sensation. For the first time in many years I felt totally alone, isolated. It was silent but I could imagine the sound of the waves lapping against the hull of the boat. All I can say is that it was a surreal experience and after a while I fell into a supremely satisfying sleep. I was quite sad for my session to end. I showered, was re-measured and told to drink plenty of water. I was given some phials of essential oils and lotions that I needed to apply daily over the next week. And the result? My skin felt beautiful, incredibly smooth, just like a new borne baby’s (and for a few days my poop was as green as a new borne baby’s). I did lose several inches and I can say that it was definitely worth it. |
